AIF- Alternative Investment Funds:

Alternative investment funds are a category of investment that is separate from the conventional investment categories. The conventional way of investing is putting your money in stocks, bonds, and cash. However, alternative investment funds include private equity, hedge funds, real estate, arts, and antiques.

Alternative Investment Funds (AIF) are divided into three different categories.

An investor (Resident Indian, NRI, Foreign Citizen) can invest in mutual fund schemes, PMS and AIFs offered by AMCs and other registered entities from the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).

The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), the single regulator for all financial products in IFSC – mutual funds, stocks, PMS, AIFs, insurance, and pension.

Currently, NRIs and foreign nationals can invest in inbound funds i.e. funds which invest in Indian markets through direct stocks or mutual funds. There is no need to do stringent KYC of clients. IDs like passports and utility bills are adequate. Also, there is no need to invest through NRI or NRO accounts. All transactions can be executed through any foreign bank account. However, transactions have to be done in dollars. No tax in gift city, if underlying is not in direct equities. However, NRIs and foreign nationals may have to pay tax in own country.

Resident Indians can also invest through IFSC provided the fund should have outbound structure i.e. funds investing in other geographies. New GIFT City accounts for Indians. Bank Account in Foreign currency eg: USD, Euro etc, can remit up to 250k USD per year, TCS of 20% on remittance >7 Lakh.
